Fundamentals of ISO 13849-1:2023 for machinery safety: defining and validating the required Performance Level.

Course Description

This ISO 13849 training teaches engineers how to design and validate the safety-related parts of machine control systems and how to reach a required Performance Level.

What the ISO 13849 training covers

The course covers the ISO 13849-1 approach: required and achieved Performance Level (PLr/PL), the designated architectures (Categories B, 1–4), reliability data (MTTFd), Diagnostic Coverage (DC) and Common Cause Failure (CCF), the combination of subsystems, and validation under ISO 13849-2. Its relationship to IEC 62061 is outlined.

  • Introduction and reminders of dependability (functional safety) principles; main standards in the field.
  • Regulatory context: Machinery Directive & Regulation; ISO 12100 and positioning of ISO 13849.
  • ISO 13849-1 design requirements: general design principles; determining the required PL (PLr); associated requirements (MTTFD, DC, Category).
  • Designated architectures: description and value.
  • Software requirements: system software; application software; IEC 61508-3 techniques and methods; cybersecurity.
  • Technical provisions by technology; well-tried safety principles and components; fault exclusion.
  • Validation of the achieved PL: quantitative performance; systematic capability; software validation.
  • Process-optimization tools: code analysis and automated testing; SISTEMA.
