Course Description

This EtherCAT training explains how EtherCAT achieves high-speed, deterministic real-time communication and how to develop and integrate EtherCAT master and slave devices.

What the EtherCAT training covers

The course covers the EtherCAT operating principle (processing frames “on the fly”), the EtherCAT Slave Controller (ESC), process data (PDO) versus mailbox communication, the CANopen-over-EtherCAT (CoE), EoE and FoE protocols, distributed clocks for tight synchronisation, state machine and error handling, and the ESI/ENI description files used to configure a network.

Embedded developers, integration and test engineers and architects designing EtherCAT masters, slave devices or motion systems.

  • Ethernet operation recap; EtherCAT basics.
  • Topologies: possible topologies; integration into a classic Ethernet network; redundancy; Hot Connect and Fast Hot Connect.
  • EtherCAT frame structure: the frame; datagram header; addressing; circulating-frame principle; EtherCAT command types; Working Counter.
  • EtherCAT Slave Controller: Process Unit, FMMU, SyncManager, EEPROM, IRQ, slave states, watchdog.
  • Mailboxes: general operation; CoE / EoE / FoE / SoE.
  • Communication timing (SYNC/DC); Safety over EtherCAT (FSoE).
  • Analysis and diagnostics; installing EtherCAT networks.
