Master the assurance-based life-cycle approach for safety-critical airborne software defined by RTCA DO-178C.

Course Description

This DO-178C training introduces the guidance used to develop and certify airborne software and how its objectives scale with the criticality of the function.

What the DO-178C training covers

The course covers the DO-178C software lifecycle and processes, Design Assurance Levels (DAL A–E), the objectives and independence required at each level, structural coverage including MC/DC, requirements-based verification, configuration management and quality assurance, and the DO-330/331/332/333 supplements for tools, model-based development, object orientation and formal methods.

Avionics software and systems engineers, verification and certification staff, and project leads developing or assessing airborne software to DO-178C.

Pedagogical Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Put the scope of DO-178C into context within aircraft and systems certification activities (initial airworthiness).
  • Understand the general principles of development assurance for the life cycle of safety-critical embedded software.
  • Use the DO-178C objective tables according to the software level (IDAL).
  • Relate DO-178C to the other standards and reference documents in the field.

  • Regulatory context – AMC 20-115D & EASA CM (SoI).
  • The aeronautical systems engineering process and development assurance.
  • General principles of DO-178C: system and software life cycles and their interactions (SW, HW, System).
  • Software planning process: role of plans and development standards; planning activities and associated objectives.
  • Software development processes: requirements (HLR and derived HLR); design (LLR, derived LLR and architecture); coding (source code).
  • Software verification process: analyses and reviews; test campaigns and structural coverage (coupling, MC/DC).
  • Software configuration management process.
  • Software quality assurance process (SQA).
  • Certification liaison process.

A digital training manual is provided to each participant. The session’s teaching plan outlines the methods used.
