Real factories and machines rarely speak a single language. A drive might use EtherCAT, a sensor sub-system CANopen, and the plant controller PROFINET. A protocol gateway is the device that lets these worlds exchange data without redesigning any of them.
What a gateway actually does
A gateway terminates one protocol on one side and another on the other, mapping process data between them: object dictionary entries on a CANopen side, for instance, mapped to cyclic I/O on a PROFINET side. Good gateways handle not just the data mapping but diagnostics, timing and configuration.
When you need one
- Integrating legacy equipment into a newer control system (e.g. a PROFIBUS or DeviceNet device into an Ethernet line).
- Connecting sub-systems from different vendors that standardised on different fieldbuses.
- Bridging CAN-based machinery (CANopen, J1939) to an Industrial Ethernet backbone.
- Adding connectivity — exposing field data to OPC UA or an IIoT layer.
