Two products can use the same fieldbus yet face very different certification paths, because “the protocol” is only part of the story. What matters for approval is whether safety-related data is protected to a recognised standard, and whether you can prove it.
The protocols, briefly
- CANopen (CiA 301/302): versatile machine and device communication; add CANopen Safety (CiA 304) for SIL3 safety data.
- J1939: the standard for heavy-duty and off-highway vehicles over CAN; safety extensions apply in mobile machinery.
- EtherCAT: high-performance Industrial Ethernet; carries functional safety via FSoE.
- FSoE / PROFIsafe: safety layers (IEC 61784-3) that reach SIL3 / PLe over EtherCAT and PROFINET respectively.
From protocol to standard
Functional safety is governed by IEC 61508 (the base standard) and its sector derivatives — ISO 13849 for machinery, ISO 26262 for automotive, IEC 62304 for medical software, and more. Your target SIL or Performance Level, set by a risk assessment, drives the evidence you must produce for the communication path.
Why the stack vendor matters
Whatever protocol you choose, certification hinges on documentation: safety manuals, assumptions of use, diagnostic coverage and verification records.
